Berlin: Applied Bioreactor Technology for Microbial and Mammalian Cell Cultures

The summer academy 'Applied Bioreactor Technology for Microbial and Mammalian Cell Cultures' is a 2-week course that can substitute an elective course in your study programme. The purpose of this elective course is to provide students with hands-on experience in cultivating microbial, algal, and mammalian cells using a range of modern lab-scale bioreactor systems, including stainless-steel, glass, and single-use vessels. Students will learn how to operate, monitor, and optimise different bioreactor types, such as stirred-tank and rocking-motion systems.
You will obtain knowledge about:
- Explain the fundamentals of bioreactor design, operation, and process control strategies
- Describe growth characteristics of microbial, algal, and mammalian cell cultures
- Operate different bioreactor types safely and effectively. Prepare, inoculate, monitor, and harvest microbial, algal, and mammalian cultures
- Apply analytical techniques to measure biomass, metabolites, and product concentrations
- Interpret and evaluate bioprocess data, identifying critical process parameters and troubleshooting issues
- Work effectively in a laboratory team environment, following safety and documentation guidelines
- Collaborate effectively in intercultural laboratory teams
- Communicate scientific results clearly and accurately in English, both orally and in writing.
Lectures will be based on theory and practical laboratory work.
The entire course will be taught in English by lecturers and professors from BHT and Business Academy Aarhus.
There will be an exam at the end of the summer academy, which is weighted 5 ECTS credits.

The summer academy is offered in collaboration with our German partner, BHT Berlin, in Berlin and will be held from 29 June - 10 July 2026.
Who can join?
The summer academy is ideal for students who want to incorporate a different academic or cultural experience in their educational profile. It is held with students from BHT.

If you can get a credit transfer – that is, if the summer academy can partly or fully substitute a subject in your programme – your participation in the summer academy is free.
Practical information
There is no tuition fee for the course. You must pay all other expenses in connection with the summer academy in Berlin.
If you are offered a place in this summer academy, a non-refundable registration fee (2,000 DKK) must be paid in approximately mid-April to ensure your registration. This money will go towards your accommodation and meals in Berlin, as well as some of the combined social activities.
Students must therefore NOT book their own accommodation.
We will ask for the rest of the payment a little later in the process.
Students will be able to apply for Erasmus funding.
